About Friday Night Funkin'

What Is Friday Night Funkin'?

Friday Night Funkin' (FNF) is a free, open-source rhythm game that became a global internet sensation. In FNF, you play as Boyfriend, a young rapper trying to win the heart of Girlfriend by defeating her protective father, Daddy Dearest, in musical rap battles. The gameplay is simple but addictive: hit directional arrows in time with the beat, rack up combos, and out-perform your opponent to fill your side of the progress bar.

The Story

The main story spans multiple "weeks," each featuring new opponents and progressively harder songs. Week 1 pits you against Daddy Dearest in simple tutorials. Week 2 introduces Skid and Pump, the spooky Halloween duo. Week 3 brings Pico, Boyfriend's trigger-happy ex-friend. By Week 7, you're facing Tankman in a high-speed showdown. Each week tells its own mini-story through the song selection and character dialogue.

Who Created FNF?

FNF was created by a team of four for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam in October 2020. Ninjamuffin99 handled all the programming, while PhantomArcade and evilsk8r created the distinctive cartoon art style. KawaiSprite composed the infectious soundtrack that has since been remixed and sampled by thousands of fans. Despite being a game jam entry, FNF exploded in popularity and now has one of the largest modding communities in indie gaming.

The Modding Community

What truly sets FNF apart is its modding scene. The open-source nature and accessible codebase have enabled thousands of fan-made mods: new weeks, characters, songs, visual styles, and even complete overhauls. Popular mods like VS Whitty, VS Tricky, Mid-Fight Masses (featuring Sarvente), and the B-Side Remixes have millions of views on YouTube. The FNF modding community on GameBanana and GitHub is one of the most active in gaming.
